Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

"It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities"
Albus Dumbledore

Vision and Rationale

Our PSHE (including RSE) curriculum focuses on the skills, attitudes and knowledge that will enable children to keep themselves safe, develop awareness of their thoughts, feelings and responsibilities and make informed choices. Through this child-focused and tailored approach, we will be able to improve the children’s capacity to learn and, ultimately, their life chances.

The choices made within our PSHE curriculum are motivated by the belief that if attention is paid to supporting children’s personal development in a structured and developmentally appropriate way, this will not only improve their capacity to learn (across the curriculum) but will ultimately improve their life chances.

Early Years Foundation Stage – Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The educational programme for personal, social and emotional development set out in the EYFS Framework is delivered in our reception classes in line with the Extend Reception Curriculum.

Key Stage 1 and 2 – Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. The government asks schools to tailor their local PSHE programme to reflect the needs of their pupils and to use their PSHE education programme to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

We follow the Jigsaw PSHE 3-11 scheme of work to deliver a curriculum that helps children understand themselves and their world.  This scheme of work also meets the requirements of the statutory curriculums for relationships education and health education.

Jigsaw provides a spiral and progressive comprehensive PSHE Programme in which the statutory elements sit and are embraced. Jigsaw materials are age- and stage-appropriate, and offer the flexibility to deliver more sensitive issues in ways appropriate to Mendip Green’s ethos and values. Lessons are tailored to each age group and delivered sensitively, ensuring children feel supported and understood.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is lifelong learning about physical, moral, social, cultural and emotional development. It is about understanding the importance of positive relationships and of respect, love and care. Within this context, it also involves learning about sex and sexual health at an age-appropriate stage of children’s development.

Our RSE curriculum is tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the pupils, ensuring that both boys and girls are prepared for the changes that adolescence brings and - drawing on knowledge of the human life cycle set out in the national curriculum for science - how a baby is conceived and born.

(Full details of our RSE Curriculum are available in our RSE Policy in the Policies section of our website)
