Physical Education

“Dream as big as you can dream, and anything is possible”
Michael Phelps

Vision and Rationale

At Mendip Green, we want every child to enjoy being active and feel confident taking part in physical activity each week. Physical Education (PE) isn’t just about sport - it’s about helping children discover what their bodies can do, building skills, and encouraging them to always try their best. We offer a wide range of activities so every child has the chance to find something they love, while learning the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and having fun.

Our PE curriculum is designed to support the whole child - not just their physical development, but also their confidence, creativity, and social skills. Children learn about different types of physical activity, from everyday movement to school sports and competitive games. These experiences help them understand the value of staying active both on their body and mind, growing a positive attitude towards health, fitness, and well-being. Through a host of enrichment opportunities, inclusive events, clubs, and competitions, they can even represent Mendip Green in school games—something that really builds confidence and team spirit.

Our Physical Education Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage – Physical Development

The educational programme for physical development set out in the EYFS Framework is delivered in our reception classes in line with the Extend Reception Curriculum.

Reception Curriculum

Key Stage 1 and 2 – Physical Education (PE)

We follow the national curriculum.

We use The PE Hub scheme of work to teach PE. This scheme is fully aligned with the national curriculum whilst complimenting effective learning strategies through progressively sequenced teaching. The PE hub develops foundational skills and then builds upon these to allow children to engage in a range of games and sports.

In addition to our PE lessons and sporting enrichment opportunities, children have plenty of chances to stay active every day. This includes activities like our Active 20 sessions, the Daily Mile, and OPAL Play, helping them build healthy habits and enjoy movement throughout the school day.
